Senior Greek Prosecutor Asks Lawmakers to Investigate 2009 Budget Deficit

A judicial official says Greek lawmakers will be asked to decide whether the country’s former prime minister and finance minister should be investigated regarding claims that the 2009 budget deficit was artificially inflated.
The official said a Supreme Court prosecutor will forward the case and allegations concerning Greece’s Statistical Authority, or ELSTAT, to Parliament on Wednesday. He spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because he was not authorized to release the information.
The ELSTAT chairman has denied claims by two former board members that the 2009 deficit was falsely raised to 15.4 percent of annual output.
At the time, George Papandreou and George Papaconstantinou were Greece’s prime minister and finance minister respectively — although in accordance with Greek law the case file does not name them.
