The Piraeus shipping community is mourning the death of shipping magnate Yiannis Pateras, who passed away at the age of 46 after fighting with cancer for two years. The deceased is survived by his wife Nineta and their three children.
The news of his loss was a hard blow both to the shipping world and to the people of his hometown of Oinoussai, Chios.
Mr. Pateras was initially hospitalized at “Ygeia Hospital”, while trying to keep his health problems hidden from the public eye.
After the rapid downturn of his disease, Pateras was transmitted to a London hospital for further treatment but the doctors there did not accept him given his deteriorated condition.
He was then transported in a private jet, owned by his friend Poly Chatzioannou, to the USA, where he was admitted to the hospital and eventually lost the battle against cancer.
