Athens Supports Belgrade for European Capital of Culture 2020

Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis has sent a letter of support to Belgrade regarding its candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2020, the Organisational Board of ‘Beograd 2020’ released in a statement.
The City of Athens is the tenth city in a row to support Belgrade in its preparation for the candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2020. Belgrade has so far received support from Perugia, Vilnius, Corfu, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Podgorica, Banja Luka, Maribor, and Skopje, while talks are under way on the possibilities of improving cultural cooperation with several more cities in the region and the European Union.
Kaminis pointed out that culture represents the most effective form of cooperation among cities and can decisively contribute to European integration.
Τherefore, “the  unique cultural heritage of Beograd, characterized by a mixture of Balkan and European influences, makes this city the most appropriate candidate for organising cultural events of high artistic value, combining the genuine local spirit with our common European civilization” wrote Kaminis in his letter.
Aleksandar Pekovic, President of the Organisational Committee of ‘Beograd 2020’ and Deputy City Secretary of Culture, said that the support is of great importance for the City of Belgrade and the ‘Beograd 2020’ project in its application for the title of European Capital of Culture, as well as for further prospects in the area of cultural cooperation between Belgrade and Athens.
