Anti-Austerity Protesters Burn German Flag in Athens

Some 25,000 anti-austerity Greek protesters gathered outside the Greek Parliament during a general strike rally of all trade unions on Tuesday.
The adverse weather conditions in Athens were not enough to turn the crowds away. A group of protesters set fire to a German flag but were repelled by the police forces with chemicals, while hundreds of protesters chanted “Nazis Out!” and clashed with the police outside Parliament.
The otherwise peaceful strike was organized separately by ADEDY/GSEE and PAME, and was called against the new austerity measures reported to be implemented by the government in the coming days, including drastic cuts in the minimum wage.
Unions and employers have already rejected calls to cut the minimum wage of 751 euros per month, arguing that it would make the country’s four-year recession even worse.
