University of Athens to Honor Daniel Cohn-Bendit for His Philhellenism

On Thursday, February 9, the French Green MEP, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, will be honored by the University of Athens for the services he has offered Greece in the past years.
Daniel Cohn-Bendit became a popular and well recognized figure in Greece in 2010, when he criticized the “hypocrisy” of the Franco-German axis, which continued selling weapon systems to the recession-hit country over disproportional exchange rate payments.
However, according to ProtoThema, although Bendit’s latest positions have been portraying him as a modern Philhellene, in the past he had supported a series of controversial theses opposing the Greek ones, such as in the cases of lifting the embargo from North Cyprus to support the Turkish accession to the EU or the recognition of FYROM under the name “Republic of Macedonia”.
On November 8, 2010, Mr. Bendit told Euronews that the Cyprus Problem was halting the EU accession of Turkey and it needed to be solved. “Europe needs to put pressure on opening the Northern Cyprus’ airports and ports. Then Turkey must open its ports and airports to the Greek-Cypriots. Turkey needs to make a serious effort to withdraw some of its troops from Cyprus” said Mr. Bendit.
On the name issue between FYROM and Greece, Mr. Bendit had told the European Parliament in 2008 that it was high time a final solution should be met. “Macedonia is Macedonia and Greece needs to accept it” noted Mr. Bendit, according to a ProtoThema report.
