By Inga Athanasiadou
Greece became the centre of attention for the international media once again, with different outlets reporting that Greeceā€™s parliament debated painful austerity measures amid violent protests in Athens.
‘BBC News’ made a report on Greece saying that “Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos urged calm, insisting that the austerity package would “set the foundations for the reform and recovery of the economy”. “Vandalism, violence and destruction have no place in a democratic country and won’t be tolerated,” he said in a speech in parliament before the vote.
Moreover, ‘Reuters’ referred to Greece by publishing an article with the following title: “The Greek parliament approved a deeply unpopular austerity bill to secure a second EU/IMF bailout and avoid national bankruptcy, as buildings burned across central Athens and violence spread around the country”.
‘CNN’ mentioned among others that amid clashes, Greek Parliament approves austerity measures. As lawmakers debated, police turned tear gas and stun grenades on demonstrators outside Greece’s Parliament. Several buildings, including a bank, cafes, and a movie theater in Athens were set ablaze.
Other international media such as ‘Financial Times’, Washington Post’ and ‘Al Jazeera’ emphasized the clashes between protesters and the police in Greece while the Greek Parliament was voting on the austerity bill.
