A Byzantine road was discovered during construction work for the metro in the city of Thessaloniki, as it has been announced during the 25th conference for the archaeological work of the year.
The road that has been found is considered to be the most important finding of the 3rd millenium concerning North Greece.
The Byzantine road was discovered at the centre of Thessaloniki (Agia Sofia and Egnatia Streets) and had been preserved for three centuries. The findings concern a 70-meter-long part of the whole Byzantine road.
The Byzantine road’s paving slabs and curbs are made of marble, while on the south part of the road an arcade has been maintained.
