Seamen to Hold 48-Hour Strike Starting March 19

Greek seamen declared a rolling 48-hour strike starting on Monday, March 19. The seafarer union PNO announced that sailors are not willing to kneel before any political pressures that do not gratify their rights and demands.
The Union will protest against the pension cuts, as well as the incorporation of their social security fund NAT into the new social security and health care organisation EOPPY. The Union also asked for the immediate signing of the Collective Labour Agreement for 2012.
The newly appointed Minister of Development, Anna Diamantopoulou, and the Minister of Labour and Social Security, George Koutroumanis, will meet after 2 pm on Saturday, March 17, with the executive committee of PNO.
Bodies and farmer unions from Crete and the Kyklades Islands have sent letters to the PNO and Ministers of Development and Citizens’ Protection, asking for a compromising solution that will not avert the transportation of products and cause severe economic damage.
