'The Economist' Predicts that Papademos Will Be Vice-President of Samaras Government

In its latest article concerning Greek politics titled “Steady as she goes, surprisingly”, the Economist expresses the belief that despite the fact that bipartisanship in Greek politics will be overthrown after the forthcoming elections, the outcome is unlikely to make a fundamental difference.
According to the article, “a shake-up of Greece’s cosy two-party political system would hardly be a surprise, given the economic and social upheaval caused by the country’s worst recession in almost a century”.
The writer points out that many voters “are sick of the corruption and clientelism that has flourished under the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and the conservative New Democracy party, which have alternated power for 30-odd years”.
However, despite the results of polls suggesting that many voters will go for smaller anti-reform parties that “could undermine Greece’s new bail-out”, the elections will probably show that “the two big parties still look strong”.
The article also remarks on the “successful cohabitation of the two big parties under Lucas Papademos”, and on that ground, makes a prediction for the day after the elections.
It explains that New Democracy is unlikely to win a majority and that it will form a new coalition government with PASOK.
The article also emphasizes that “Such a pairing would enjoy a strong majority. Several senior cabinet ministers may keep their jobs. Mr. Papademos might even be persuaded to stay, perhaps as Mr Samaras’s deputy. That would reassure Europeans that Greece will keep plodding on.”
