By the end of 2013 the new takeoff/landing 10-28 runway of Macedonia Airport in Thessaloniki will be ready to function, thus enabling intercontinental flights.
The news was announced by Ioannis Magriotis, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Networks.
The project’s budget is 246 million Euros and is covered by EU and national resources. 63% of the project has been completed by now and it is expected to be fully completed and ready to function by the end of 2013 or early 2014.
The project includes the expansion of the runway in the sea by 1000 meters, so that it has a final length of 3440 meters and an additional 150 meter security zone, in order to safely receive large aircrafts.
After these changes, the Macedonia Airport will have the ability to service intercontinental flights and collaborate with airports of the wider area. That will economically and touristically benefit the city of Thessaloniki and its near destinations, I. Magriotis explains.
The 10-28 runway will be fully reconstructed and expanded by 2013 so that it has the same potential with the above mentioned sea runway.
