Limassol: Greek-American Actress Olympia Dukakis in Rose of Martin Sherman

The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOK) presents Oscar winning Greek-American actress Olympia Dukakis in the  one woman play “Rose,” by Martin Sherman, on April 3, 4 and 5 at the Latsia Municipal Theatre, and on April 6 at the Rialto in Limassol. It will be in English with Greek subtitles.
“Rose” is the story of a woman who manages to survive a Nazi concentration camp. Sherman was inspired by his own grandmother’s story, and created the unforgettable portrait of an 80-year old who gazes back at her turbulent life.
“Rose” is the figure of a woman trying to find her place in the world, in the place where she lives and grows up, in love and in her relationships. She gets disappointed and frustrated but she keeps on struggling, falling in love or compromising. She speaks with her laughter and her silent moments.
“Rose” is not just a woman who suffered in the Holocaust. She also represents a higher symbol for every woman, every housewife, every wife and mother who is struggling to adopt the role they deserve throughout history.
The play was nominated for the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Play when it premiered in London’s National Theatre in 2000, where  Olympia Dukakis starred in it for the first time. Later that year the show was transferred to Broadway, where it was also well received.
Dukakis has starred in a variety of movies and plays over the years including “Steel Magnolias” and “Moonstruck,” which won her the Oscar.
“Rose,” in which Dukakis plays alongside Mimi Denisi, comes under the auspices of the Israeli Embassy in Cyprus and is also being supported by Time Out magazine.
