Monument In Memory of the Holocaust Victims to Be Built in Thessaloniki

A plate depicting the names of the Jewish martyrs of Thessaloniki that were led to German concentration camps and were brutally murdered will be offered to the large Greek city by Germany. The monument will be positioned in Eleftheria Square, according to municipal plans.
The Jewish Community of Thessaloniki is pleased with the news, as 50,000 Greek Jews who were victims of the Nazis will be honored. Similar monuments are to be found in most European cities where locals lost their lives during Hitler’s inhumane cruelties.
There have already been talks between the German government and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and it’s apparent that both sides are very enthusiastic to create the monument in the city.
The Mayor of Thessaloniki has long expressed his intentions regarding the reinstitution of Eleftheria Square from a parking lot into a memorial park for the victims of the Holocaust. The plans are already being processed by authorities.
On Sunday, April 22, at 11:30am, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki will hold a memorial service honoring six million victims all across Europe in the Holy Synagogue “Monastiriotes.”
Thessaloniki will never forget that it lost 96 percent of it Jewish population in 1943. A commemorative event took place this past January as well.
