The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games in Antiquity in ancient Olympia opened its doors to the public after having been robbed almost three months ago.
The municipality of ancient Olympia organized a ceremony last Wednesday at the courtyard of the Museum to celebrate the re-opening and declare President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge “Honorable Citizen” of ancient Olympia.
The event was attended by Mayor of ancient Olympia Euthumios Kotzas, Prefect of Western Greece region Apostolos Katsifaras and Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games.
“I’ve been honored several times in my life. But here, in ancient Olympia, it’s very special,” said the Belgian IOC President. “Pierre de Coubertin’s heart lies inside the Olympic Academy. I don’t know where mine will be, but I will always be with you. It’s moving to be citizen of a unique city,” he added.
In ancient Olympia, many other events took place, including exhibitions of Olympic-related items and a twinning ceremony (the 9th of the city) with Yakoutsk, Republic of Sakha (Russian Federation).
