The promotion of Crete’s endemic plants should be given a boost soon, says Cretan community’s representatives.
During this past weekend, as part of an event held to promote Crete’s aromatic plants and herbs, local businessmen, producers and local members of the Municipality of Platania came to the conclusion that there is a need to showcase the Greek island’s endemic plants.
The special event was held for professionals, as well as specialized academics. The exhibition attracted many locals and the Business Association of Platania.
“In our view, our Municipality combines everything. There is great food, excellent natural environment surrounding the inland, fascinating beaches and night life, but it also offers facilities for some willing to relax,” said the vice-president of the Association, Petros Marinakis.
In response to the question posed by a participant in the event, he said that on Crete, there have been 270 species of endemic plants documented. “We should realize that these plants are Crete’s ace up its sleeve,” he commented, and added that this may have come as a result of the island’s geographical position between Europe, Asia and Africa.
He also explained that most tourists visiting Crete “never know the beautiful inland and return to their hometowns, having known only the ‘route’ from the hotel to the beach.”
