Acropolis Rally 2012 Begins

One of the most challenging rallies on the World Rally Championship calendar begins tomorrow at the courtyard of Zappeion Hall. The dusty, rough and rocky mountain roads around Athens during the Greek hot summer period are once again promising motorsport fans a unique spectacle of 55 competing crews from 32 countries.
After the Qualifying Stage of a 6.2km course that will determine the running order, the event will properly begin with a 25km long course late on Thursday evening.
On Friday, contending crews will run eight stages over twelve hours and limited service, while Saturday’s route of eight stages introduces the new 21km Ziria stage, which brings the competitors closer to the Peloponnese. On Sunday, the last day of the event, crews will run the 3.97km New Loutraki Power Stage.
The award ceremony for the 58th edition of the Acropolis Rally will be held on May 27 at the Loutraki Club Hotel at the Corinthian Bay.
The Acropolis Rally has been held for 51 years, except for 2010, by the Greek motorsports organization Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (ELPA), making it one of the longest-standing in world rallying. The rally is known for being extremely tough on the competing cars and drivers due to the pounding terrain and high summer temperatures, often reaching 50°C within the cockpit. In 2005, it was announced as Rally of the Year.
