Giorgos Seferis was the first Greek ever to be awarded the Literature Nobel Prize. He was honored for his valuable contribution to the Greek and international spiritual life. Odysseus Elytis followed in 1979, which was the second Greek to have won the Literature Nobel Prize by the Swedish Academy.
It’s been fifty years since the night that Seferis received that great honor – for which he initially “apologized” to the attendees because as he said he had to express thanks in English, despite having won the Prize for his Greek writings. The Union of Writers of Northern Greece and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki dedicate the day to the great Greek poet and his work (Teloglion Foundation of Art, at 20.00)
“He belongs to the top modern poets and presents the most typical poet of Greece’s modern poetry,” says President of the Union of Writers of Northern Greece Vironas Kampas to ana-mpa.
“His work has been of great value to the further development of the Greek poetic movement. His poetry is inspired by life and the history of our country,” he adds.
The choir N. Astrinidi will also participate in the ceremony honoring Giorgos Seferis and his poetic achievements, presenting three of his poems turned into songs.
