The Greek Financial Crime Unit (SDOE) is targeting the tax statements of around 500 people of considerable wealth from all fields of public life, including former ministers, MPs, elected officials and heads of state agencies and enterprises. It is only certain that the officers will come across big frauds and inconsistencies in some cases.
The investigation includes the search of bank deposits, contracts of sales and purchases, leisure crafts and activities of companies they or their family are part of, according to a protothema.gr article.
According to information, these actions were presented to Finance Minister. Prof. George Zanias by the head of the Financial Crime Unit, Mr. Diotis.
These checks are running parallel to the investigations undertaken by the public prosecutor of the FCU on matters that occupy the public opinion (Siemens, submarines etc.) in order to reveal any involvement of politicians.
“It is not just Akis,” as is meaningfully mentioned by executives of the FCU, suggesting that investigations will continue in all directions, and not just towards one political party, even if these people are not related to complaints, big corruption cases or tax evasion already revealed.
The results of the investigation are expected to accomplish a “catharsis” in Greece’s shaken political system.
