8-Year-Old Cypriot Boy-Wonder Wins World Chess Championship

An 8-year-old Cypriot school pupil has won the World Chess Championship in the category of 8-year-old amateurs, according to a statement by the Famagusta chess club yesterday. Cyprus is proud of its promising generation.
Andreas Hatzinicolaou, the son of refugees from Karavas village in Kyrenia, is student of the second grade of the “B” primary school in Dherynia.
After successfully beating his peers in Cyprus, Hatzinicolaou went on to come first in the category of 8-year-olds in the 2012 World Amateur Chess Championship in Halkidiki last month.
According to the Famagusta statement, this is the first time a Cypriot pupil has reached such remarkable rankings in the world of chess. In 2010 and 2011, the 8-year-old Andreas came first in the Cypriot national championships and represented Cyprus at a number of international tournaments.
Last March, he came first in the Cyprus Friendship Tournament, and first in the Cyprus competition on solving chess problems. His future is about to get even brighter, given his awards at such an early age.
In the same 2012 amateur competition in Greece, Cypriot pupils Solomos Isaak and Haris Hatziconstantinou came third and second in the categories for 12 and 14-year-olds respectively.
