Greek Holy Synod Condemns 'Corpus Christi' Play Αs Blasphemous

Described by the Catholic Church as heretic, the controversial theater play “Corpus Christi” by Terrence McNally is to be presented for the first time to Greek audiences by Greek director Laertes Vassiliou and the theater group “Artisan.”
The Greek Holy Synod condemned the play as “blasphemous, slandering the God-man face of Jesus Christ” during the session of its permanent members and called on the Greek faithful to reject it as well.
“Corpus Christi” is a passion play by Terrence McNally dramatizing the story of Jesus and the Apostles. Written in 1997 and first staged in New York in 1998, it depicts Jesus and the Apostles as gay men living in modern-day Texas. It utilizes modern devices such as television with anachronisms like ancient Roman occupation. Judas betrays Jesus because of sexual jealousy. Jesus officiates a gay marriage between two apostles.
According to the Holy Synod, the play is considered to be offensive and historically incorrect, since it is not based on the Holy Scripts and is contrary to the long traditions of Greece and the Greek Orthodox Church. “The screenwriters of the play must show the necessary respect to our people’s historic tradition and the teaching of our Church” noted the Synod.
McNally’s controversial play will be staged at 9 p.m from June 7th until June 12th at the Chitirio Theatre, Athens. According to the Greek director and the theater group, the play aims to offer audiences a chance to embrace a different perspective to self-awareness by listening to their hearts.
