Greece Elected Member of the UNESCO intergovermental Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage

For the first time Greece has been elected to participate  in the 24-member Intergovernmental UNESCO Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage after the closure of the Fourth Extraordinary Session of the Committee in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
The core functions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage are to promote the objectives of the Convention, provide guidance on best practices and make recommendations as to measures for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, such as social practices, oral traditions and customs. It further examines the nominations submitted by States Parties for the inscription of intangible cultural heritage elements on the Lists of the Convention as well as proposals for the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices. The Committee is also in charge of granting international assistance. 143 states have participated at the Convention and this number is due to rise.
Greece’s election as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee, which took place on June 8th in the French capital, imports huge international significance, states the announcement of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism, adding that the efforts for actually safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage will be enhanced to  the greatest extent possible.
The 7th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO will take place in November 2012 in Grenada, Spain, and the Greek delegation will be there for the first time.
