Pharmacist Murdered by Cold-Blooded Thieves in front of Shocked Witnesses

Spyros Poukamisas

52-year old pharmacist Spyros Poukamisas was shot to death in cold blood in Rendi, an Athens suburb, on Wednesday afternoon by two armed thieves who wanted to steal the bag he was carrying. The incident, according to reports, occurred a little after 3 p.m.  at the junction of Pantelis Nicolaides and Pericles Street.
Reports said that the two unidentified killers attacked the 52-year old pharmacist and attempted to mug him but when he refused to give up the bag he was holding, the two killers shot him in cold blood in front of a large number of shocked witnesses.
Authorities were immediately called to the scene, but despite the presence of a strong police force, the two killers remain wanted.
The worst part of this story is that the pharmacist was killed in the same spot where a couple of young police officers died during their patrol duty in 2011. Giorgos Skyloyiannis, 22, and Yiannis Evangelinelis, 23, both members of the DIAS squad, were shot dead in the line of duty while attempting to arrest three robbers armed with Kalashnikov guns, after a call was wired about a robbery in a nearby kiosk. The reports stated that a total of eight police officers were struck by gunfire with three or four assault-rifle wielding perpetrators in Rendi.
The deceased leaves behind a wife and two daughters.  He was known for his struggle to protect the rights of his colleagues as executive member of the Pharmacist Association of Piraeus. He was perhaps one of the most beloved pharmacists in the region of Rendi.
Shootings and rogue robberies are becoming everyday occurrences giving rise to a generalized mood of fear and anxiety as Greek citizens feel literally unprotected in their country.
