France and Cyprus to Import Greek Roses of Mount Voio

International markets are showing a great interest in products based on roses, such as attar of roses, rose water and the traditional Greek sweet made of rose petals.
Cosmetics, sweets, and fragrance oils based on rose flower have glutted French and Cypriot markets over the past years. However, demand is increasing while supply remains limited. Consequently, businesses of both countries are now turning to Greece to find the roses needed to cover their demand.
More specifically, Greek producers began rose cultivation in 2005 and after four years, the results are rather encouraging. According to the Agriculture Association of Aromatic Plants, Fruits and Vegetables of Voio area, this year’s yield offered them more than 6.5 tons of roses.
The Agriculture Association of Mount Voio in northern Greece intends to increase rose production by building a modern laboratory, where it could pack its products, mostly attar and rose water from the Kozani area. At the same time, people in charge of the Association have already collaborated with a specialized scientist  in order to produce cosmetics as well. These products will be ready by February 2013.
The same Association intends to cultivate several other plants and herbs able to be used in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical sectors, such as lavender and sage.
As is obvious, such productions would offer hundreds of jobs, somthing Greece definitely needs at the present time.
