Guido Westerwelle: Greece Must Keep Its Promises

On the evening of a Greek election crucial to the future of the euro, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle joined other German politicians in a pledge to help Greece on Sunday, but warned that the new government must stick to the strict austerity program in order to receive financial aid.
“We are ready to help Greece, but solidarity is not a one-way street. That mean Greece must stick to its commitments,” Mr. Westerwelle said on German television channel ZDF.
With votes still being tallied and results too early to call, Mr. Westerwelle said many politicians in Greece were acting irresponsibly, because they did not understand how serious the situation in Greece was. When they do not hold to the previously agreed austerity program, then Greece would not receive financial aid, he added.
“One thing must be clear, the agreement is non-negotiable,” the foreign minister said. If they were to renegotiate the austerity program and financial aid package in Greece, he added, then they would lose credibility with other European countries who are making the proper reforms.
Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament and a member of Germany’s Social Democrats, also warned Greece to stick to its commitments, speaking on German television channel ARD. If Alexis Tsipras, who leads the Coalition of the Radical Left known as Syriza, does not want Greece to run out of money in August, he must compromise, Mr. Schulz said. Mr. Tsipras has threatened to abandon the austerity program in his political campaign.
