Germany vs Greece: It's More Than Just a Soccer Game

Imagine being a Palestinian playing against Israel, a Tibetan playing against China or a Kurd playing against Turkey. Now, all three peoples I mentioned are about to lose their identity since their countries are not even politically recognized, so we’re nowhere near as bad as they are, but you get the gist of it. On one side of the field, you have Bill Gates and on the other one you have a homeless person. It’s not just Goliath vs David, it’s not just the strongest against the weakest, it’s also the master against the slave. It’s Germany against Greece.
Part of our nation’s culture has always been about being rebellious. Or stubborn. Sometimes we even contradict just for the sake of it. Whether we’ve heard the other side’s opinion or not, we’ll most likely go against it and glorify our reasoning. From Leonidas “μολὼν λαβέ” (come and take it) to Ioannis Metaksas’ “ΟΧΙ” (no), we “turned down” the Persians’ and the Germans’ offers of being part of their supreme empires and instead went and fought them. After yesterday’s national elections in Greece, I realized that my country’s people, have added “wisdom” (…) to their brains. From now on, we Greeks shall go with the flow. We shall behave and listen to whomever is in authority. Soft, sensitive, sentimental, weak, foolish, call it whatever, we can now be described as such.
However, history repeats itself. On Thursday in Poland, where 70 years ago the Nazis were performing their atrocities against Jews (including Greek-Jews) and rebels, the German soccer team will try and crush Greece in a sign of dominance. Thank God, we have a group of 22 players that will not negotiate based on Germany’s whim. They will do anything possible to win the battle, in remembrance of Germany’s atrocities back then, but even more now, where in a more discreet and appealing, yet still cunning and blood-sucking manner, Germany is trying to take over Europe implementing austerity plans.
We are about to face our biggest enemies. Most likely, we will lose. Their team consists of world-class players, they strategically attack together like an army of chimpanzees and the referees most likely will be on their side. However, even though the past has taught us, that 99 times out of a hundred, the richest, most powerful and better side wins, it has also taught us that Greece has guts and Friday will mark the day when we’re going to use them again. No more bending over to the Germans!
P.S. My boy, Grigoris Makos, is starting the game. Good luck mate!
