German Bild: 'Angela Merkel, Why Are you Helping Greece?'

Greek people are sick and tired of new measures, of austerity, of increasing unemployment as a result of the crisis, of insecurity, of European media presenting false dilemmas to them, and so forth. When Greeks plead for mercy” on the part of Angela Merkel and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble, the German newspaper Bild targets them both, criticizing they are doing the opposite–helping us.
Bild journalists are attacking Merkel and Schauble for pumping money into crisis-hit Greece. To enhance their stance, they use a series of arguments based on older statements of the two German politicians. It appears that Merkel has repeatedly promised to her tax-paying base that she will not be helping Athens anymore unless there is something to gain from it.
Her promises were not based on truth however. In March 2010, the federal government publicly rejected a possible financial improvement of Greece as that would not help Germany boost her EU status in a long-term basis. The truth is that Berlin agreed and signed a stimulus package to Greece.
And the article goes on. The federal government didn’t want the tax-payers’ money be directly used for saving the Euro, but only to ‘extract’ certain assurances on behalf of Greece. The truth: German tax-payers gradually gave away €22 million in cash to enhance the ESM.
The article also refers to the fact that Greece presents signs of progress after a short period of government absence, as it was granted an extension of the loan payment to the European partners until 2017.
