Greek Archaeological Mission in Mesopotamia

The Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens obtained permission by the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Ministry of Culture of the Republik of Iraq to conduct excavations in two important archaeological sites:

  • Tell Nader, which dates between the 6th and early 1st millennium B.C. and lies on the outskirts of the city of Erbil
  • Tell Baqrta, which dates from the Chalcolithic down to the Isalmic period and lies approximately 28 km to the south of Erbil, near the village of Minara

In addition, the Governor of the Erbil Province, Mr. Nawzad Hadi Mawlood, invited a Historical Research Team of the University of Athens in order to examine both older and more modern theories concerning the location of the Gaugamela battlefield.
Α group of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the UoA have been selected to participate in the second excavation phase taking place in September 2012 at Tell Nader and also at Tell Baqrta. However, the University cannot cover the costs of their airplane tickets (in total 6,000 Euros) and so the students started an online fundraiser hoping to collect some of the needed funds.
For any contributions to aid the students’ participation in the projects, please visit http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/115719?show_todos=true#_=_
