Albanians Used to Come to Greece to Work, Now They Come on Vacation

Almost two decades ago, a mass migration wave from Albania came to Greece in pursuit of jobs. Thousands of Albanians walked the distance to Greece, poor and desperate but always hard workers. In 2012, they are visiting Greece for different reasons, for shopping as well as for vacation.
According to tromaktiko, a Greek businessman in the tourist field told them that this year, most of his customers come from Albania not from Greece. “They come from Tirana or other Albanian cities by car because they are only few hours away from Greece,” he continues. He also stresses the fact that they do not drive bargains on the price of a hotel room.
Some tourist agents make efforts to send them to Italy instead. Mayor of Sarande cooperated with Italian authorities in a bid to connect the Albanian seaside town with Italy via hydrofoils. These flights will be available not only for vacation, but also for medical reasons in case of an emergency.
