Efforts to register Knosos on the UNESCO World Heritage lists may have proven vain so far, particularly due to the urban sprawl all around it; however, it appears that the nomination will have greater success now.
A new file will reportedly be prepared, which will include the whole Minoan Civilization monuments, namely not only Knosos, but also Festos, Zakros and the archaeological site in Malia.
“It is a fact that no historical or physical monument on Crete is registered on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage monuments list. And that is especially unfortunate, because the unique Minoan civilization and the archaeological site in Knossos in particular, are deprived from the recognition they deserve and that is due to certain procedures in shaping the surrounding place that remains neglected,” explained TEE/TAK (Technical Chamber of Hellas / Department of Eastern Crete) President Petros Iniotakis.
“It’s been a constant request by UNESCO that the existing problems be dealt with, according to the operational instructions the organization has issued, in order to promote the inclusion of Knossos,” added Mr Iniotakis pointing out that “all local authorities should work closely with their respective Ephorates of Antiquity and the responsible units of the Central Service of the Ministry of Culture, as well as the local community in order to commonly battle any obstacles that might crop up.” He concluded that it is about time the beautiful archaeological wealth on Crete be accordingly protected receiving the place it deserves on the World Cultural Heritage Monuments lists of UNESCO.
