Overlapping Technical Faculties and University Departments to be 'Rationalized'

A sweeping education reform is about to shake Greece’s academic world and bring about a series of changes, some of which are unavoidable.
Overlapping technical faculties and university departments will be shut down in the framework of the government’s effort to curtail state expenditures and impose 11,5 Billion Euro measures as soon as possible.
There are 499 faculties functioning in Greece’s higher educational system, apart from the Military Schools, 286 of which are AEIs (Highest Education Institutions) and 213 are TEIs (Techological Educational Institutions).
During the past decade (1999-2009), when European Union funds were uncontrollably used, approximately 100 new institutions were founded. Until now, 24 AEIs function in 36 cities and 16 TEIs in 40 cities and towns. The ones based in Attica, Patras, Ioannina, Corfu and Chania have their central institution in a big city, while the ones based in other regions have divided their “headquarters” in two to six cities. Graduates of many of Greece’s educational institutions are only 30% of the registered students – the rest of them don’t make it to graduation.
The new educational reform called “Athena” resembles that of “Kallikrates” applied the country’s municipalities. A special research project to be conducted by the Authority For The Quality Assurance Of University Education (ADIP) will determine which faculties are no longer needed and have to be shut down. 30% of the existing institutions will be eliminated permanently.
