Crete Fire Fury: Suspect Shoots Passing-by Men Because they Were Filming the Flames

Two men were shot by a furious livestock breeder after refusing to stop filming the raging wildfire in Heraklion, Crete on July 30.
Two friends, aged 24 and 35, decided to take video footage of the fire raging in the area of Viannos on their mobile phones. The 20-year-old livestock breeder, who was passing by the area in a vehicle driven by a farmer, demanded that they stop their recording.
He told them that his property and his fields were being ravaged while they were having fun about it. When the friends refused to stop filming saying they had not done anything wrong, the assailant exited the vehicle and shot the 24-year-old six times and the 35-year-old once.
The 24-year-old suffered severe wounds all over his body especially his legs, while the 35-year-old’s wounds were less serious. They are both being treated at the University Hospital of Heraklion.
Residents have been evacuated from their homes in Lower Viannos, Chondros village, and Martha village due to fears that the flames would approach residential areas.
Strong winds in Viannos have made the firefighting efforts extremely difficult. The firefighters and three fire-fighting aircraft continue their battle against the unrelenting flames.
