Europa Nostra announced their decision to award officials of Nisyros for their significant work on preserving the ancient walls of Nisyros, dating back to classical times. According to the European conservation movement, islanders managed to turn the ancient city into Nisyros’ most important sightseeing.
Tomorrow afternoon on August 1st, Costas Karras, vice-president of the Europa Nostra and founder of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and Cultural Heritage, will attend the ceremony organized to award the officials for their hard work. General Secretary of the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Culture, Mrs Lina Mendoni, will also take part in the event.
This distinction will offer no financial support to the Municipality of Nisyros, but it is of high importance since it will make Nisyros well-known all over Europe.
Europa Nostra represents some 250 non-governmental organizations, 150 associate organizations and 1,500 individual members from more than 50 countries who are fully committed to safeguarding Europe’s cultural heritage and landscapes.
