Another Drowning Case Spreads Sorrow while Respective Rates Keep Rising

The summer of 2012 is proving to be a dangerous one for swimmers in Greece, with many drownings reported, twice the European Union average. The latest victim was a 21-year-old male who didn’t emerge from a spearfishing venture off the island of Salamina, near Piraeus, on Aug. 9.
Greek Port authority rescuers and islanders tried to find him but he wasn’t discovered until a relative found his body in 18 meters of water and brought it to the surface where paramedics were waiting, only to find he was dead. His family was said to be devastated.
Officials said 145 people had drowned in Greece by the end of June, another bad year for swimmers in Greece. While 283 people died from drowning in 2008, the figures jumped to 327 in 2010 and 371 in 2011. Officials have not stated why they believe the numbers are rising, but there are no lifeguards on Greek beaches. The World Health Organization (WHO) said drowning is the third-leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury related deaths.
Let’s hope there won’t be more “drowning statistics” to talk about any time soon. We should remind, that as a result of the financial crisis, there will not by any lifeguards at many municipal beaches during the summer season.
The cuts in expenditures are apparently linked to “cuts” of innocent lives.
