New Tragedy Shakes Paros Island After the 15-year-old Teen Assault Case

A taxi driver who tried to stop a bank robbery in the popular resort Naoussa on the island of Paros was shot and killed, police said. Three gunmen invaded an Alpha Bank branch about 8:20 a.m. on Aug. 10 while a fourth kept watch when the taxi driver happened on the scene and was shot.
A  manhunt was immediately launched on Paros and nearby island Naxos for the four suspects with several police vehicles and helicopters taking part. An Alpha Bank branch on the island of Spetes was  robbed on July 26 by a gang of gunmen as well, who got away with 500,000 euros after using two female clerks as human shields.
The Paros robbery netted 45,000 euros, police said. In both cases, the robbers fled the island on in inflatable boat. The two bank robberies bear many similarities and police are trying to figure if the  same gang was involved. One of the suspects in the Spetses robbery was said to be a woman.
It was the second tragedy to hit Paros, after a 15-year-old girl was brutally assaulted by a 21-year-old Pakistani national who admitted he dashed her head against rocks on a beach when she wouldn’t give up her mobile phone he said he was trying to steal. He’s also been charged with a sexual assault. The girl was found unconscious with the bottom of her bathing suit missing.
