According to an official announcement, the Independent Greeks party, a breakaway from the New Democracy Conservatives, will propose a law giving Greek expatriates the right to vote in the country’s general elections from their country of residence and have the opportunity to be represented in Parliament.
Party President Panos Kammenos said he believes it is important for Greek expatriates to participate in their homeland’s democratic procedures. Giving Greeks abroad the right to vote has long been a sticky issue with debates as to which party they would support and how much weight their ballots would carry.
