Periklis Ilias has won the Gold Medal at the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships that was held at Ornans, in France.
Despite adverse weather conditions and the fact that he was hit with hypoglychemic shock, Ilias, leader of Team Protek, triumphed over all, beating some formidable challengers.
Shortly after being forced to stop, due to a flat tire, he was overtaken by riders from the Czech Republic and Germany. When he got back into the race, Ilias passed them to regain the lead he then didn’t relinquish again, finishing in a time of 4:18, leaving the pack behind.
Germans Moritz Milatz and Christian Heineke finished second and third. Another Greek rider Giannis Skordas, finished 89th.
