Gianniotis Wins Open Water World Cup Swim

After narrowly failing to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Greek freestyle swimmer Spyros Gianniotis won the open water World Cup leg in Shanghai, to finish first in the standings for 10 kilometers, or 6.2 miles.  He won four of the six rounds to top an impressive field and redeem himself after the Olympics.
“I am perfectly satisfied with all the races. I have met my target which was to clinch the top spot in the World Cup. Now I’ll get some rest, get some time for myself to fill my batteries ahead of next year that includes the World Championship in Barcelona,» said Gianniotis, who was fourth in the London Olympics.
His coach, Nikos Gemelos, was also satisfied: “We may have not got the Olympic medal, but at least the year has ended in glory,” he said. Gianniotis won three individual medals at the 2005 Mediterranean Games, and represented Greece at three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 2000.
