Eroglu Calls for Deadlines in Reunification Talks

Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has called for the sluggish Cyprus talks to be sped up after the elections next year, as Famagusta Gazette reported today. He said that the Cyprus talks could not resume automatically from where they were left off, after the election of the new president of the Republic next year. Eroglu said it is necessary to turn a new leaf in the Cyprus negotiations after the elections. “We can’t act as if nothing has happened. We need to open a new page and establish a new table for the negotiations. We need to move towards a conclusive process of talks. Deadlines, timetables and a process of give-and-take are necessary for this,” Eroglu claimed.
The Turkish Cypriot leader also said that he wishes the presidential elections will motivate south Cyprus to review its policies, and added that a mutual agreement is needed to overcome the current deadlock in the process. After four-years of dialogue, there still remains little indication of any fruitful progress. In recent months, talks have halted as Cyprus concentrates on the EU Presidency.
The negotiations to end the division, which started in late 2008, have been described by some as the last chance for peace in Cyprus.
