Santorini's Volcano Will be Watched

An amount of 54,251 euros is going to be offered for the instrumentation procurement and installation of an active system for monitoring volcanic activity that will sense ground motion and store the resulting signals in a local data acquisition unit (DAU) for long-term earthquake monitoring station deployments in Santorini.
The project promoter is the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks while the Organization of Anti-seismic Planning and Protection is going to monitor the volcanic activity as well.
Last July, sea-floor sensors were submerged at the bottom of the Santorini spectacular Caldera to monitor geological activity, within the framework of a scientific mission that was completed on Oct.22.
The operation launched on July 13, 2011 by an international team of scientists from Greece, France and Spain, is designed to monitor underwater volcanic activity in the region after last year’s unrest, as well as to look for signs of deformation.
The 24-member research team has used two vehicles for deep-sea dives, Thetis, and Max Rover of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, to have a better view of the Caldera.
