To Many, Greek Recession Mirrors 1930’s Depression

It might not look like it in tony neighborhoods and at fancy restaurants where Greek politicians and the rich elite dine and live, but for many, Greece is in a Depression – with a capital D – not a recession.

Five years of a shrinking economy, with nearly two million people out of work, some 1.2 million jobless whose benefits have expired, bludgeoned by pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions, with 68,000 businesses closed, 4,000 restaurants failing in a year: those are the more common sights to many Greeks.

The image was not lost to some in the media, as a recent Bloomberg article pointed out in a piece that likened Greece’s state to that of the Depression of the 1930’s in the United States and Germany. showing the challenge that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in trying to right the economy with more austerity that is being fiercely opposed with protests, strikes and riots.

The article noted that as the number of destitute rises, so does desperation, and crime has soared along with support for the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which has been accused of bashing immigrants, intimidating gays and going after people it considers blasphemers.

The economy shrank 18.4 percent in the past four years and the International Monetary Fund, which, along with the European Union and European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB makes up the country’s international lenders putting up $325 billion in bailout loans, sees a further 4 percent drop next year.

Bloomberg noted that’s the biggest cumulative loss of output of a developed-country economy in at least three decades, coming within spitting distance of the 27 percent drop in the U.S. economy between 1929 and 1933, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis in Washington.

“Austerity has been destroying tax revenue and therefore thwarting the intended effect,” Charles Dumas, Chairman of Lombard Street Research, a London-based consulting firm, told the news agency. “There’s no avoiding austerity, though, because these people have no borrowing power. The deficits are there.”

“The experience of the 1930s says you need to stimulate the economy,” said Vassilis Monastiriotis, a senior lecturer in political economy at the London School of Economics. “The rise of the far-right in Greece isn’t something ephemeral that will go away when the crisis ends. And it’s very dangerous if the rise of the right causes relations with neighbors like Turkey, Macedonia, say, to deteriorate.”

The German economy contracted by about 34 percent in the years after 1929 and resulted in Adolf Hitler becoming Chancellor in 1933, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. Even after growth resumed in Germany beginning in 1934, it took until 1937 for output to exceed the level enjoyed in 1929, the data show.

The IMF’s prediction for a 4 percent contraction next year suggests Greece may surpass Latvia as the nation suffering the deepest recession in the European Union. The Baltic country’s output started to shrink in 2008, erasing 20.7 percent of the economy in three years. The country, which has a 7.5 billion euros, $9.7 billion, from the IMF and the EU, has now resumed growth.

“Getting the banks lending again is the key thing,” said Gabriel Sterne, an economist at brokerage Exotix Ltd. in London. “Right now, the Greeks don’t have a banking system like anyone else understands it. Greek banks hardly do any new lending.”

The IMF also has reviewed its assumptions, saying that the knock-on effects of cuts to government spending, called fiscal multipliers, may be more than three times greater than previously estimated. That means that a given spending reduction risks erasing a larger amount of output, causing revenue to fall and deficits to increase.

The IMF forecasts that government expenditure this year will fall to levels last seen in 2006 even as Samaras readies another $17.45 billion spending cut and tax hike package and is ready to lower the boom again on the country’s most vulnerable – workers, pensioners and the poor – while letting the rich and tax cheats largely escape sacrifice again. For them, there’s no Recession or Depression, only prosperity.

Why does GR keep calling Golden Dawn a “neo-nazi” party… when the party themselves say they are not “neo-nazi’? Do leftists in Greece need to always parrot foreign press? Can’t they think for themselves?

  • Anonymous

Illegals are not “immigrants”. They are illegals. They are CRIMINALS for having violated our borders (and constantly break our laws).  All you are doing is parroting foreign media and NGOs (who I’d note call FYROM “Macedonians” and dishonestly pretend not to notice their identity quick change into “Ancient Macedonians” and irredentist rhetoric)

Some of the leftist staff of GR are based in California.. They simply repeat the same multiculturalism crap they read in Jewish dominated US press because they’ve been conditioned to think a certain way. (meanwhile in Israel, most Jews are anti-multiculturalism and they criticize and eject illegals just like GD)

They go on and on about “antisemitism” and “fascism” because from a young age leftist Greek Americans are taught through the media to give special treatment to Jews and to not criticize Israel (which is framed as “antisemitism” rather than “criticism”)  Leftists in Greece are less prone to this reflexive behavior because there is not as much Jewish dominance of press.. yet. (thus they are more sympathetic to Palestinians)

When people talk about “brainwashing” this is what they essentially mean. Mindless automatons that simply follow some collective view rather than show individual judgment and character. Credit to the Jewish people though. A brilliant bunch. They know how to look after their interests.

On the other hand only our leftist pseudo-intellectuals only know how to destroy Greece. They support illegals (rather than be hostile towards them from violating our borders), engage in constant Greek bashing by foreigners, are anti-business, stay silent about FYROM (and Turkish collusion with them).

They try to frame their leftist beliefs as “human rights”  but it’s really just unprincipled cowardice and stupidity. They irrationally undermine our country on virtually every front (why Greece is a mess today) because it might lead to conflict and criticism from their foreign “comrades” (….who I’d note,,,,silently collude with FYROM ultra nationalists as they attempt to erase our very ethnic identity)

If this is what Greeks are today… cowards…we do not deserve the name Greek. Leonidas would defended his country not worry what some anti-Greek foreign invader thinks of him.

Ah…. leftists caught with their corrupt greedy hands in the cookie jar yet again. China’s communist leader’s family members… worth 2.7 billion dollars!

Chen Jieren, the nephew of He Guoqiang, of China’s nine most senior Politburo
members, told American diplomats in 2009 that the Communist party has carved
up the country’s economic “pie” among its leaders.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/9634920/Chinese-leader-Wen-Jiabaos-family-accumulate-billions-during-his-time-in-office.html

Commie Syrzia swear communism will make us all rich and they will end corruption… if we just give them power to “share”… other people’s money. I mean why work to achieve something on our own when we can sit around whining about how “the banks” and the government is to blame for our all economic ills.

I say lets all go out and strike and violently riot for free leftist money instead. If anyone points out we are the very corruption and incompetence we claim to be against… just rant “fascism” and “human rights”.

Don’t forget Syriza’s communist Chinese “comrades”….. call FYROM “Macedonians”! Clearly they clearly deeply “care” about their Greek communist “comrades”… by staying silent about IMRO propagadists once again  trying to ethnically eradicate the Greek people

I am an American who has lived in Europe for 35 years in both Greece and Portugal in the aftermaths of both countries’ military dictatorships. I believe the characterization of neo-Nazi is accurate. They use a Nazi salute and claim it dates back to ancient Greece, when it in fact is Roman. Their anti-immigrant stance echos the Nazis in references in Greek to immigrants as vermin. Their anti-immigrant behavior in attacking foreigners physically and violently. My (American-Irish) wife and the musical group she plays in were recently playing in a bar. The group plays traditional Irish music. There were two parties of folks celebrating birthdays. They stomped, clapped and seemed to be having a good time. Their black t-shirts with an American bald eagle and the English words to the effect that the wearers were true Greeks and proud to be among that group pretty much gave them away 100% as Golden Dawn. After the music stopped they brought out their flag, gave Nazi salutes and had a photo op of all that. A British-Irish friend who looks very Aryan and is married to a Greek told them to stop the gestures. One must stand up to this type of behavior. The only difference I can see between Golden Dawn and Hitler’s Brownshirts is the color of their “uniform.”

    a.  Greece was Roman (for over a thousand years). The salute they are using was also used by Metaxas government. Metaxas was not a nazi (as their existed a Nazi party in Greece and he didn’t belong to it). He also FOUGHT the Nazis.
    http://www.symigreece.com/mysymi/blogs/Will/763.htm

    b. ILLEGALS are not “IMMIGRANTS”
    .
    c. The immigrants that are in the country legally they generally don’t target. Their chief target is masses of illegals.

    d. Israel has anti-illegal policies also (including settlers using violence against them).  Do you equally frame Jews  that want to preserve a primarily Jewish state “Nazis”?

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/24/world/meast/israel-immigration-protest/index.html

I actually don’t support GD (they are generally self-righteous imbeciles like our some of our leftists) but I do support the expulsion
of illegals form Greece. (forcibly if necessary).

I also feel that there are double
standards in reporting at work. Compare characterizations of illegals in greece versus ilelgals in Israel. Attempts to protect Greece’s spoverign borders are called “racism” (typically by leftists). For instead its self-defence.

Also, why does US media (dominated by Jewish ownership I might add) not report on these nazis?  Also, you might want to ask your british friend why the British and Irish governments cals them “Macedonians” and don’t say anything about their behavior.

You might also want to ask your American’ colleagues why they reference the former Yugoslavians as “Macedonians” and pretend not to notice their irrdentism and attempts to usurp our very identity.

    “This (US)
Government considers talk of Macedonian “nation”, Macedonian
“Fatherland”, or Macedonia “national consciousness” to be
unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees
in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against
Greece” – US State Department Dec, 1944 (Foreign Relations Vol. VIII
    Washington D.C. Circular Airgram – 868.014/26)

  • Anonymous

The xenophobia in Greece is directly the result of foreign racism towards Greeks.,

Of particular note… the dead silence by the pretentious foreign bigots who decided to reference the former Yugoslavians as “ethnic Macedonians” against Greek objections…… who today have suddenly developing selective amnesia  and blindness  as they have suddenly turned into “ancient Macedonians” and openly encourage irredentism against Greece.

Or is racism and subtle attempt to ethnic cleanse Greeks  now “human rights”?

Nazi Salute ? Under Metaxas rule (Metaxas was the man who say No to Mussolini who wanted to invade Hellas), this salute was mandatory.
Also this salute is the Hellenic Olympic Salute and the Roman Salute (Don’t forget we are Byzantines;).

    GREECE AND WW2-4th AUGUST REGIME-IOANNIS METAXAS :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1drsa1ZIW40

GD is a fashist, ultranationalist and METAXIST party, not nazi.
Let’s remember that the original aryans are the Persians (The meaning of the name Iran is “the land of the Aryans) and that the Ancient name of Afghanistan is “Aryana”.
Seriously, I don’t think Hellenic ultranationalists like GD members would pretend they are … Persians lol. You know, not all fashist parties are nazis.
And it’s not because an ultranationalist party isn’t nazi that it isn’t dangerous.
Same for the leftists extremists : It’s not because some of the ultra-left parties aren’t communists that they aren’t dangerous.
Each party has it’s own ideology even if they shares some common values with parties on the same sides of the political chessboard.
GD is an Hellenic ultranationalist party with Hellenic Ideology and History as well as Metaxist values.

I don’t understand why these articles only act like the rich cheated and stole.  Newsflash…  The people roaming all the villages with BMW’s and Mercedes who were sheep herders stole too.  Everyone had their hand in the pocket and they are still stealing.  I have a hard time having sympathy when I went there this past summer and everyone was trying to come up with a scam to get government money.

  • Anonymous

Exactly. Not to excuse any corruption among any powerful Greeks, but all the leftist fanatics go on and on about the “elite” and “bankers” and “EU”…..as if the poor and middle class didn’t also rob the Greek state blind these last few years too. All the poor (and illegals) are automatically treated by “victims” by many leftists. It utterly irrational encourages bad behavior rather than personal responsibility.

Even though GD extremist gets all the attention in foreign press (because its foreigner necks on the line not because they care about Greeks) in practice this shows me leftist extremism in Greece is a far far bigger problem. Even GD’s economic politices are essentially leftist (they go on and on about the eltie  and poor and offer free money “solutions” just like the commies do)

As a Greek I am disgusted by this behavior. These leetches constantly demand to get money off someone else vis-a-vis more state money redistribution scams.  We need some pro-business people that are more concerned about leveraging technology to create things in fair trade than leftist fanatics that behave like buglers trying to morally justify state sponsored thievery because of their own mistakes in life.

Gd aren’t wrong to apologetically support ejection of illegals from our country (unlike some of our treasonous leftists or foreign Greek haters that manipulatively try to frame border violators as “migrants” and “immgrants”

Where (some) of GD goes wrong is framing them as “subhuman” or using racist rhetoric against foreigners (which is different than singling out illegals)

I understand where some of the anger is coming from though. We’ve tried to be polite these illegals the last few years, Instead of appreciating the temporary hospitality they instead turned NGOs against us and now act like they own the place.I also don’t trust the foreign NGOs, press or Greek leftists anymore. They claim they don’t mind Greek deporting some illegals but all they keep doing in practice is crying racism each time we have tried to do that. (even slandering our selective PM Samaras as “racist”)

Time to show illegals the door. No amnesty for illegals other than the most extreme of cases. Most of the “refugees” in practice are economic migrants.  If anyone objections, offer to deport them to their own country instead. If they cry “racism”.. .we need to cry racism back at their silence over FYROM and double standards in reporting towards Greeks.

I know and I’m furious too about NGOs like HRW controlled by financial criminals like George Soros who want to force us to accept multiculturalism.
I’am also furious about other european officials who rants against the government while they are themself deporting illegals to Greece (thanks to Dublin II).
I am also fed up with crimes committed by some of the illegals (my mother is French and I live in France but my Hellenic family including my father live near the center of Athina so I know how fast the situation have degraded) so I can understand the anger of people like Eleni Zaroulia even if I disagree with what she said and also I disagree with some of the ideology of the leaders of XA.
I just consider that deporting back wherever they come from ALL illegal persons is one of the Human Rights of the Hellenic People, that’s all.

“Human  rights”  is code words for “my ideology”. I actually believe that some, not all rights, should be universal but much of what should and shouldn’t be a human right is not universally agree upon. NGOs, the American government, and even the UN all pretentiously behave as if they are the definitive experts on the subject  and try to impose their values on others. They reality is even they often disagree on issues.

One key unresolved issue is what rights do indigenous people have over non-indigenous.  To many of the patronizing leftist “multiculturalism” nitwits… effectively none.  In practice such a pure equality position effectively amounts to call to gradually ethnically erase all regional cultures and demographics through unrestricted immigration (essentially the model of America that decimated the indigenous Indian populations).

Its really not much different than 17th century British imperialism but wrapped around words like tolerance”, “diversity” and “minority rights”. They slander anyone that tries to protect their region as “racist”.

What’s really funny is many of the same sorts support preserving sanctuaries for animals in places lke the Galaplos Islands and discourage introduction of non-indigenous animals When it comes to saving a regional Tortoise they don’t frame it as Tortoise “racism”. They call it animal rights.

For the multiculturalist freaks and others criminal NGOs, try to search the name “Barbara Lerner Spectre” on youtube. People like her are crazy and indeed hypocrite and they can create the reasons for a civil war in Europe.

  • Anonymous

I know who you are taking about. She goes around preaching “multiculturalism” to all of Europe… but doesn’t do the same in her native Israel.

She frames a primarily Jewish state as “human rights”.. but then hypocritically frames other people’s desire to reserve their ethnic demographic as “racism”. She is essentially an ultra nationalist that is racist against all non-Jews but she cleverly manipulates words to hide it. (and anyone that critics any Jewish extremists like this is typically slandered as “antisemitic”)

And our clueless leftist idiots fall for this ‘multiculturalism”  crap. “Multiculturalism” in Europe is just code words for “slowly wipe out indigenous populations through immigration like the Americas”).

It is precisely  leftist multiculturalist extremists that trigger the opposite extreme of far right groups. Because some of the leftists have no sense of moderation when it comes to immigration and encourage dual identities and dual loyalties…. nations end up imploding in civil wars.
