Bishop Anthimos Lashes Turkish Soap Fans

Greek orthodox Bishop Anthimos has unleashed thunderous criticism on Greek fans of Turkish TV soap operas, according to local reports.

“Nobody must watch Muhtesem Yilzil (a Turkish soap opera called ‘The Magnificent Century’),” he said. “Watching Turkish soaps is tantamount to telling them we’ve surrendered”. Greeks, like viewers in the Balkans and the Middle East where the series have long been broadcast, have found the allure of Turkish soap operas difficult to resist. In Athens viewers are glued to tearjerkers like “Suleiman the Magnificent” and “Sila”.

But Bishop Anthimos is not alone. Greece’s showbiz community is fed up with Turkish soaps too. “Sila in the morning. Sila in the afternoon. Sila 24 hours a day. We can’t take anymore,” complained TV actress Nikoleta Karra.

But Sila’s premise, which hinges on the romantic escapades of a ‘modern girl’, is the perfect escapism for austerity hit Greeks, many of who are reluctant to give up their soap addiction. Social networking sites are abuzz with chatter about “Greeks addicted to Turkish soaps” and “Turk serials on the Greek telly.”

Turkish soap producers are loathe to renounce the new-founded Greek trend, particularly within the political context of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic nationalist government. Hot on the heels of the Turkish-Greek co-production Yabanci Damat (The Foreign Groom), which charts the highs and lows of a Turkish-Greek love story, comes The Last Balkan Summer.

Set in Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Montenegro the action takes place during the Ottoman wars. Another, The Marvelous Journey, is a cultural-gastronomic adventure between the two Aegean coasts. “At least on TV, peace between the two countries has broken out,” mused the Turkish daily Hurriyet.

Huh? Why is this news? He is entitled to have his opinion on it.  Are the leftists on GR now plugging Turkish soap operas? Seems everything is anti-Greek on allegedly “Greek” Reporter …..is anti-Greek.

  • Anonymous

    Daily ternary of leftists “reporters”.

1, obsessively try and find any story about rightwing extremists.
    2. stay blind to far leftist extremists that far outnumber them
    3. look for ways to attack Greek church
    4. paint all the poor as “victims” to the elite (rather than likely even more prone to be being corrupt).
    5.  Undermine our government by resorting to hyperbole and slander
    6. pretend they don’t notice their alleged foreign “comrades” in media and alleged ‘human rights” NGOS…. staying dead silent as FYROM nationalists turn into “ancient Macedonians” and constantly rant ‘United Macedonia”

I don’t know whether to feel more shame as Greek for the stupidity of some on far right or the cowardice of some on our leftists.

  • Anonymous

    7. look for stories to portray all the illegals as “victims”

(who disrespected our borders… often engage in criminal active… and manipulate NGOs who call FYROM “Macedonians”  to try and stay.)

    8. Irrationally attack Greek identity as response to GD… then claim to be a proud “Greek”.

Hurray for our  leftist comrades that have the time to defend Turkish soap operas (clearly the issue of our times)….. while meanwhile in Turkey the…elected…. Turkish government says….

“Turkey is the first country to recognise the Republic of Macedonia’s constitutional name and its national identity. It sees Macedonia as a close friend, partner and credible collaborator in the Balkans. In this respect, Turkey was the first country to open an embassy in Skopje. The right of the Republic of Macedonia to determine its constitutional name should be respected,” Davutoglu says.”

Lets all be friends comrades.. with a Turish government colluding with those trying to ethnically eradicate our very identity..  Nope. No cowardice going on here.

Pleased to read about you in email, but disappointed that you advertise Turkish Airlines twice and you  give an option to read  Bishop Anthimos urging Greeks not to fill up on Turkish soaps.  You are an enigma!!  Why don’t you advertise Aegean or Olympic?  You ARE AWARE that Turkey calls ancient Greek ruins theirs in travel ads as well as continues the indignity of discrimination against full rights for our Patriarch and Patriarchate in Constantinople!  My serious thoughts towards possibly writing for you gratis are on hold until you foster more ethnic pride for the homeland of our  ancestors…whose blood was shed for Hellenism and “Gia Tin Ellada”!  “E tu Brute?”

  • Brain_dead_media

I do not support GD but they are right a segment of Greek leftists are not only treasonous but literally anti-Greek.

A perfect example of this is leftist MARIA MARGARONIS. Her husband is David Guttenplan (a jewish guy that gets her writing gigs at various big name media outlets.. only more fuel for GD). For YEARS Marganois has been demonzing Greeks about everything under then sun.

She frames anyone on the right as “fascist”. She bizarrely has insinuated the Nazi invasion was somehow morally justified (claiming it was partially our fault for allegedly abusing Albanians). She doesn’t see herself as  “real” Greek. She supports illegal immigration. She quotes COMMUNISTS as if they were experts on human rights. She supported  massive government spending.. right up to the point it drove our economy into the ground. (now pretends she didn’t support it). She even calls FYROM “Macedonians” and lobbies for them in the name dispute (while pretending not to notice their sudden identity change into ancient Macedonians and irredentism)

With “Greeks” like this who needs Nazis to ethnically eradicate Greeks?

At least the Nazis were upfront with their ethnic cleansing. Antihellenic leftist fanatics like Margaronis try to frame their collusion in as subtle attempted genocide of Greeks as “human rights”.

I commented about this a few weeks ago. If X.A. are so set in their mission to purify Greece from anything and everyone non-Greek, why aren’t they surrounding the television stations who broadcasting these Turkish soap operas and poison the minds of the gullible Greeks stupid enough to watch them?  I know why, because they themselves most likely are sitting at home and w3atching them…fat, lazy, good for nothing waste of pablum.

  • Daniel

thank you for your insight i googled some of the names and elements you described and was overwhelmed.

What Human Rights are you talking. Is Greece respecting the rights of its citizens? There are over 1,000,000 indigenous Macedonians who’s rights are taken away since 1913.Furthermore,modern Greeks have no roots to ancient Hellens,it is a myth you have spread throughout the World.Modern Greece is a mixture of different ethnic population.Every mention of Macedonia,Macedonians, you Greeks are going berserk! Your claim of pre-existing the Jews and the Macedonians are simply a myth. Otto wanted the glory for himself, not for you!

  • Anti Racist

I am Turkish and this makes me sad. Years ago, religious fanatics and nationalists were protesting against Mexican and Brazilian soap operas in Turkey. Such a shame to see Greece sink to these depths. I always thought Greek society was so far ahead and a role model for Turkish society. Greece is in danger of becoming like Iran unless people wake up,ban the racist party, imprison idiotic clerics and redistrubute property of the Church to the poor in Greece.

What a bunch of crap. IN 1813 you were calling yourself ethnic Bulgarians you manipulative ultra natioanlist pos. Go tell your ancient Macedonian state myths to the greek-hating idiots that trusted you manipulators.

  • Anonymous

If you are anti-racist Turk as you claim.. then first speak out against your government that colludes with ultra nationalists in FYROM trying to erase our very identity

I would say its mostly leftist lazy unpatrotic self-righteous parasites are watching them.

‘The idea that Alexander the Great
belongs to us was at the mind of some outsider groups only. These groups were
insignificant in the first years of our independence. But the big problem is
that the old Balkan nations have been learned to legitimize themselves through
their history. In the Balkans to be recognized as a nation you need to have
history of 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Since you (Greece ) forced us to invent a
    history, we did invent it.’

    (FYROM Foreign
    Minister Denko Maleski – 1991 to 1993)

    “The creation
of the Macedonian nation, for almost half of a century, was done in a condition
of single-party dictatorship. In those times, there was no difference between
science and ideology, so the “Macedonian” historiography, unopposed by anybody,
comfortably performed a selection of the historic material from which the
“Macedonian” identity was created. There is nothing atypical here for the
process of the creation of any modern nation, except when falsification from
the type of substitution of the word “Bulgarian” with the word “Macedonian”
were made.” (Denko Maleski, former Minister of foreign affairs of FYROM
from 1991 to 1993 in an interview to FYROM newspaper Utrinski Vesnik)

Where are the voices of our leftists when it comes time to defending our country from bizarre ultra natioanlist fanatics from FYROM like Peter?

“We are Slavs who came to this area in
the sixth century … We are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians” -
    Kiro Gligorov, FYROM’s first President

  • Anonymous

During WW2 when Greeks were trying to save jews… IMRO leadership volentarily colluded with Nazis in exterminating them in both FYROM and Macedonia Greece.  (because they had originally aligned with Bulgarians… since most of your are direct descendents of ethnic Bulgarians. Only after Bulgaria switched sides (when it became more obvious the axis would lose) did IMRO suddenly become “allies:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Mihailov#1934_-_1944
Today you spread ridiculous propaganda to hide IMRO fascists attrocities and try to trick jewish lobby by building giant holocaust museum and fake documentaries portraying yourselvse as “heroes” while you portray yourselves as “descendents of ancient Macedonians”.  Disgusting crypto-fascist thugs like you are even worse than GD. You abuse the terms “human rights” to push your ultra nationalist racist agenda.

Here is what the FYROM government teaches crypto-Nazis like Peter in practice. (while our far leftist edits eat up their manipulative “minority rights” lingo like Chamberlain did Hitler’s original claims of protecting minority rights of Germans )

    “Divine blessing for
you, my Macedonians. I have waited for thousands of years to be called by you.
From always with you, from eternity I am coming, I am already among you because here neither
time nor space exists. Here, at my place, the time is

    still. But at your
place, the time is now, for me to explain. Your mother earth I have
inhabited with three races: the White-Macedonoids, the

    Yellow-Mongoloids
and the Black-Negroids. The rest-all are mulattoes.

    From you,
Macedonians, the descendants of Macedon, I have impregnated the White

    race and everything
began from you, to the Sea of Japan. All White people are your brothers
    because they carry Macedonian gene.”

If someone Turkish or Greek wants to protest against some tv show… they can. In free societies people are allowed to protest for whatever they wish whether we agree with them or not. What they are not allowed to do is use force to prevent other watching whatever they please.

Banning parties is exactly the sort of thing nazis, communists and other oppressive extremists want to do Both far right GD and far left Syriza want to ban each other (and even some alleged moderates on the left and right argue “banning). However in America there is a nazi party . There is also a communist party. They are not banned.

This highlights an interesting information-age phenomenon where instant interaction through the media outstrips physical national boundaries and establishes psychological bridges across different cultures. The case in point is the popularity of Turkish TV series. These series are popular not only in Greece, but also in the Balkans, in the Arab countries, in the Caucasus as well as in Central Asia, societies with quite different cultural outlooks. This all points to the over-arching fact that people regardless of their particular religions or cultures do connect to images, emotions and bonds that are uniquely human. Turkish TV series enjoy this attraction probably because they express characteristics of people that are valid everywhere and at all times. If he is advising people not to watch them without getting a first hand impression that indicates prejudice. If he has watched them, then why is he depriving people from the same enjoyment. After all people are perfectly capable of reaching their own judgement. In my view, the Turkish shows provide good, innocent entertainment. I would humbly suggest that Bishop Anthimos should watch a few more of them himself to understand why they are so much in demand.

Greece and Southern Cyprus need laicism. Your orthodox chruches have too much power and influence.

Today in Greece, instead of talking about the economy of the Greek citizens, they talk about Macedonia.Lets understand one thing,Greece occupied part of Macedonia in 1913 with Bulgaria,Serbia and a small part Albania. The question should be;if Macedonia is “Greece,Greek”why did you signed to for the illegal division of geographic Macedonia in Berlin?.Your new found friend Borisov claims Macedonia is Bulgarian, and up to 1944,Serbia had the same claim. If you are capable, start thinking. One of you claim,to be a nation you must have 2000-3000 years of history. For your information,”Greece”became a nation in 1829 with the majority of Albanians as it was ancient Athens. Macedonia exists for more than 4000 years. The ancient discoveries of Philip and Alexander are found in Macedonian territories, none in Greece proper.Same discoveries are found in the Republic of Macedonia with no Greek written on them ,but ancient Macedonian.Andronikos said it right”Macedonia is the cradle of human  history”.The Greek government fired the curator of Athens ancient museum for suggesting to display the discoveries as found, written in ancient Macedonian.Read what Plutarch wrote(c45-120AD)”Eumenes”
