Danish Olive Gathering in Messinia

This is the fourth year in a row that the program Olive gathering in Messinia has been organized with great success, offering 60 Danish a unique opportunity to meet the process of olive gathering, participate in the procedure and taste extra virgin olive oil accompanied by many traditional Messinian foods such as lalagia, olives, cheese sfela, pesto and kourampiedes. The 60 Danish tourists, as well as two more groups from Denmark proved to be active members in the olive gathering process.
Picking takes place early to prevent the fully ripe olives from falling to the ground and being bruised in the process. Gathering the olives from the ground would allow for a more rapid harvest but would interfere with the quality of the final product.
This year’s first group visited the olive oil factory Bilionis located in Stavropigio, and the Valavanis factory in Stoupa. They also visited the traditional olive oil factory Sparpalezos in the village of Malta with traditional products from Messinia.
The Danish visitors expressed their pleasure for being offered this opportunity and said that olive gathering is not an easy process. Their journey to Greece was a chance for them to visit many places around Mani and go to Mistras, Sparta, Taigetos and Kalamata.
It is noteworthy that the most famous olives and according to some the tastiest, are those grown in the regions of Kalamata and Amphissa, while the olives cultivated in the areas of Agrinio, Chalkidiki and Thassos are considered to be equally as good.
