The Greek Film Archive is recognized filmmakers who migrated abroad due to financial or political reasons – a phenomenon occurring again because of the country’s crushing economic crisis. The archive is working in conjunction with the French Institute of Greece, University Research Institute of Applied Communication (U.R.I.A.C.) and Panorama of European Cinema.
It is the first union of a new screening project regarding Greeks of Diaspora in Cinema, which is a part of the 25th Panorama of European Cinema, held at the Greek Film Archive and Titania Cinema from Nov. 15-25.
The work of distinguished filmmakers-directors is being presented including Elia Kazan, Nikos Papatakis, John Cassavetes, Roviros Manthoulis, as well as Adonis Kirou, well-known in Greece for his book Surrealism in Cinema, an influential book on Luis Bunuel and other great filmmakers, which has been translated into Greek.
An important part of the activities of the archive concerns the promotion of Greek cinema abroad, in collaboration with the respective foundations of FIAF as well as the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Culture, The Film Center, embassies, educational and cultural foundations, universities and other organizations.
The idea is also to promote Greek cinema and introduce to Greeks the pioneering cinematographic movements of the Diaspora. A special emphasis at the Greek Film Archive is being placed on collaboration with its European counterparts.
