Man, 72, Held Bank Manager Hostage for Three Hours

Another incident resulting from the financial crisis occurred in Thessaloniki, Nov. 22. A  72-year-old man entered the Fund of Deposits and Loans at 9:30 a.m., threatening to set the building and himself on fire, while holding the bank manager hostage.
The police were trying to negotiate with the elderly man who poured gasoline inside the building, which was evacuated. While he was talking with a negotiator, the police restrained him and threw foam on his face. According to sources, the police took him out through the back door to avoid bank customers standing at the entrance.
The elderly man demanded his money withheld by the Fund of Deposits and Loans due to a debt owed to tax authorities. The police and negotiator were trying for about three hours to convince him to surrender.
According to sources, the man is a well-known businessman from Pella, who had been accused of illegal betting and slot machines.
