Greek Unemployment Rate Rises To 24.8% In Q3

unemployment-line2Greece’s unemployment rate increased notably in the third quarter, data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Thursday.
The unemployment rate increased to 24.8 percent in the third quarter from 23.6 percent in the second quarter. In the third quarter of 2011, the jobless rate was 17.7 percent.
There were around 1.23 million unemployed persons in the country at the end of the third quarter, up 5.3 percent from the second quarter. Year-on-year, unemployment surged by 40.2 percent.
The unemployment rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, was 56.6 percent during the third quarter, the highest among all age groups.
At the same time, the number of employed persons decreased 1.4 percent quarter-over-quarter to around 3.74 million during the three-month period. Compared to the third quarter of 2011, employment fell by 8.3 percent, data showed.
