A BBC documentary on Greeceā€™s rising neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party aired a recording that claims its members were behind the beating of a Member of Parliament from the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) that could disprove the extremists assertions that they had nothing to do with it.
The MP, Dimitris Stratoulis, is being sued by Golden Dawn for calling the party ā€œa gang of criminals,ā€ after he said several of its members assaulted him outside the Olympic Stadium at a soccer game on Dec. 16.
The recording made by BBC reporter Tim Franks at a meeting of about 80 party members a few days after the incident suggests Golden Dawn was involved in the attack.
ā€œFirst of all, I want to express my displeasure about some of the newer members of Golden Dawn, who are all about shouting and being provocative,ā€ the opening speaker is heard saying, according to translated speech that was aired by BBC Radio 5 Live.
ā€œThree of them were beating up that poor fellow for half an hour and didnā€™t even succeed in leaving a lump on his head. Thatā€™s shameful,ā€ the unidentified Golden Dawn member said to laughter and applause from the audience.
SYRIZA released a statement showing the documentary proved Golden Dawn was behind the attack. ā€œThe provocative, cynic confession of a member of Chrysi Avgi that three Fascist thugs were inconclusive in a murder attack against SYRIZA MP is revealing of the way of action the neo-Nazi organization acts.ā€
It added that, ā€œReally, how trapped are the Ministry of Justice, of Citizens Protection in the logic of cohabitation with Golden Dawn so that they passively observe its action?ā€
Golden Dawn critics say the party, which also has a strong anti-immigrant platform, is getting the protection of police and has at least some implicit support within the government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who also wants illegal immigrants deported.
