A 54-year-old climber who had gone missing in the Pierian Mountains in central Macedonia, northern Greece, was found safe and well on Jan. 8 after spending a night in freezing conditions.
The unnamed climber had become separated from his colleagues from a Kozani club and called a friend to inform him that he was lost. His mobile phone battery then ran out.
He fell behind the rest of the Club members near the village of Katafygio as the group was heading to the Avdelas refuge.
The last time the missing man, an experienced mountain climber carrying full winter hiking equipment, contacted his group was when he was in the Kataresko region at an altitude of 1,500 meters. He was found by members of the Greek Rescue Team morning and taken to the hospital to be checked after his harrowing experience.
