Greece Expects More German Tourists

forum_greece_imgDespite political tension with Germany over Greece’s crushing economic crisis, it is expected that German tourists will not be deterred from coming on holidays in 2013 as Greece remains a favored destination for them.
Greek officials project there could be an increase in German visitors of as much as 20 percent as the country hopes to rebound from a lackluster 2012 season that was hurt by social and political turmoil.
Germany is one of Greece’s most important markets for tourists and even a small increase in percentage could represent hundreds of thousands more visitors, critical for the industry which is Greece’s most important revenue-driver.
German tourists, beyond all others, show a strong preference in Northern Greece destinations such as Halkidiki, and provide an important spur to local economies. While Greece is hoping for German tourists, some 123,000 Greeks found work in Germany last year after being forced to flee the economic crisis that has created a record 26 percent unemployment.
