Chania's Public Market Counts a Century

Chania-stivanadikaThe city of Chania is the largest city in western Crete. It used to be a crossroad between the East and the West for many centuries and that is why it suffered from many conquerors. A walk in the narrow streets of the old city offers nostalgic images from the past. The winding roads open onto busy markets and shady squares served by cafes and tavernas.
Anyone who has visited Chania has undoubtedly visited the Public Market, a jewel building that counts 100 years. The Public Market is an impressive building in the town center, built in the beginning of the past century (1911) and houses grocery stores, butchers’ shops, a fish market, a pharmacy, bakeries, greengrocers and souvenir shops.
Chania’s main covered market is just in front of the historic Venetian and Turkish quarters of the city. People have been doing their groceries here since the beginning of the 20th century and there is still a chance to buy from the same stores, butchers, bakeries and fishmongers. Saturday is the best day to visit the Public Market and the best things to buy are bunches of local herbs.
Before the market was built almost a hundred years ago, the site was a Venetian bastion. The Public Gardens are right next door.
