Italy Ships Migrants Back to Greece

Italy to GreeceItaly’s policy of sending unaccompanied migrant children and adult asylum seekers back to Greece means they will face a dysfunctional asylum system and abusive detention conditions, Human Rights Watch said in a report published on Jan. 22.

Stowaways on ferries from Greece, including children as young as 13, are sent back by Italian authorities within hours without adequate consideration of their particular needs as children or their desire to apply for asylum, the group complained.

The 45-page report, Turned Away: Summary Returns of Unaccompanied Migrant Children and Adult Asylum Seekers from Italy to Greece, documents what HRW said was the failure of Italian border police at the Adriatic ports of Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice to screen adequately for people in need of protection, in violation of Italy’s legal obligations.

HRW interviewed 29 children and adults who were summarily returned to Greece from Italian ports, 20 of them in 2012. “Every year hundreds of people risk life and limb hiding in or under trucks and cars on ferries crossing the Adriatic Sea,” said Judith Sunderland, senior Western Europe researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Too often Italy sends them straight back to Greece despite appalling conditions and treatment there.”

Placed in the custody of the captains of commercial ferries, adults and children alike are confined on board ships during the return journey to Greece in places such as makeshift holding cells or engine rooms and sometimes denied adequate food, according to the rights organization.

Why is Italy sending back illegals to Greece in the first place? Send them  to Judith Sunderland;s homeland to process (the same Judith Sunderland that claims to support “human rights”… yet now pretends not to notice the Skopians sudden change of identity into “ancient Macedonians” and irredentism)

I learned the hard way just because someone puts the words “human rights” into their organization name…. does not mean they can’t be BIGOTS towards some group. Judith Sunderland seems to believe it is more important to hide the mistakes of Amnesty International in prior support the propagandists in FYROM… than protecting the human rights of Greeks. It is not hard to find evidence of FYROM’s bizarre attempt to usurp our identity and irredentism.

Read through the Human Rights Watch website. No mention of FYROM’s sudden identity change from Slavs into “ancient Macedonians”? No mention of rampent irredentism encouraged on a state level? Sorry when it become “human rights’ to support those that wish to ethnically erase the Greek people?

Andy why do you just parrot HRW? Can’t you use your own brain to notice HRW is just another organization that just frames its political views as “human rights”?

Don’t you notice both HRW and Amnesty International both dishonerably trying to hide their embarassment for supporting FYROM by pretending not to notice their blatently obvious sudden identity change into “descendents ancient Macedonians” and irrentism against Greece?

If Greeks do not defend our country from racism of foriegners towards us (including some of the staff of AI and HRW… not to mention foreign media like The Economist, the Guardian and NWT)… then who is going to do it?

    “This (US)
Government considers talk of Macedonian “nation”, Macedonian
“Fatherland”, or Macedonia “national consciousness” to be
unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees
in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against
Greece” – US State Department Dec, 1944 (Foreign Relations Vol. VIII
    Washington D.C. Circular Airgram – 868.014/26)

I think Andy needs to decide if he is first and foremost loyal to Greece or America.

Greece is a Greek country not the 51 American state Andy. Please stop trying to turn us into your homeland of the US by parroting anti-Greek foriegn funded NGOs.

  • Alex

I am tired of Greece being manipulatively demonized by foreigners who on one side claim Greeks should accept all thes illegals… and on the other deport illegals in their own countries. (including the countries these illegals come from.. the US, UK, Saudi Arabia, China, Canada, etc… etc..)

Greece should withdraw from Dublin 2 as soon as possible and deport every illegal in Greece. If any individual foreign funded Greek-hating NGOs seems to collude in illegal immigration into Greece, (or  colllude with FYROM while having the audacity to lecture on human rights) they should also be deported and banned from Greece. Tired of listening to their endless hate against the Greek people.

by “international law” refugees political ow otherwise must apply for that status and in the first destination they reach as such the Italians are legally justified in returning those foreign to Greece and Italy coming from Greece because those people arrived in Greece first (as that is currently what the law is I disagree with it but that is the law) it is the same law which gets Vietnamese and Chinese detained in Australia until they are sent back.
