UN Monitors Detention Conditions in Greece

kampanaki-apo-ton-oie-gia-tis-synthikes-kratisis-stin-ellada-1-315x236Independent experts selected by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to examine the allegations concerning arbitrary deprivation of liberty, visited various detention places including prisons, police stations and immigration detention facilities, from January 21 to 31, 2013.
The project offered an opportunity for cooperation among competent authorities on an executive, legislative, judicial and local level, as well as with civil society organizations. The preliminary result of the examination showed a serious shortage of deprivation of liberty in Greece, which causes concern.
In today’s press release, UN expert, Vladimir Totsilovski, recognized the positive progress regarding the legislative sector on behalf of the Greek government, in order to improve detention conditions.
“In most detention facilities visited by the Working Group, the conditions fall far below international human rights standards, including terms of severe overcrowding,” Tochilovsky said.
“Detainees are being held for months in police holding cells and border guard stations, although these facilities were designed for a maximum stay of 24 hours,” he continued. “This situation also affects the rights of pre-trial detainees to properly prepare their judicial defense as there are no adequate facilities for detainees communicating with their defense lawyers.”
The final report of the visit will be presented to the Human Rights Council within this year.
